What do you think when someone says chemicals? The consensus seems to be that chemicals are bad, just because of their name chemical. Did you know water is a chemical?
Let’s look at the definition of what a chemical is before we go any further. Chemical: Any substance consisting of matter. This includes liquid, solid or gas. A chemical is any pure substance (an element) or any mixture (a solution, compound, or gas) Chemicals occur naturally and can be made artificially.
Okay, now that we’ve got that out of the way, I want to talk to you about chemical peels and when I say chemical it may be one the following:
Enzyme Peels: Typically a blend of fruit enzymes; pumpkin, papaya, mango, orange, etc. that gently exfoliates the skin, these do not contain acids and leave the skin pH balanced. Don’t be fooled by the name, the “peel” part is regarding the top layer of dead skin cells with no down time or physical peeling.
Lactic: Alpha Hydroxy Acid, has enzymes from sour milk and is good for oily skin and helps to minimize fine lines and wrinkles.
Glycolic: Alpha Hydroxy Acid, derived from sugar cane and is a fruit acid gentle treatment for fine lines, acne, dehydration and hyper pigmentation.
Salicylic: Beta Hydroxy Acid from Latin salix, willow tree is effective in treating oily skin, clogged pores and wrinkles.
We’ve talked about chemicals to avoid previously but honestly, my job is to educate you and let you decide for yourself what your personal “no no” list is. Some people will not use hydroquinone as it is technically considered a carcinogenic however, I do educate on this and recommend this lightening agent to break up hyper pigmentation. I recommend using this product as a “treatment phase” meaning use two weeks am/pm then take a break. This is not a chemical you want to be using daily for long periods of time.
I hope this helps demystify some of these scary words you hear bounced around casually from estheticians. Now you’re more in the “know” and can feel comfortable talking chemical peels and maybe even having one.
